ASABE Revises Machinery Label Standards /news/asabe-revises-machinery-label-standards/ Fri, 08 Nov 2024 22:03:23 +0000 /?p=29989 The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has adopted the latest version of an ISO standard for safety signs, replacing the U.S. national standard of the same scope and purpose.

The new national standard, ASABE/ISO 11684:2023, Tractors, machinery for agriculture and forestry, powered lawn and garden equipment — Safety labels — General principles, establishes general principles for the design of safety labels and hazard pictorials of tractors, machinery for agriculture and forestry, and powered lawn and garden equipment. It also outlines safety label objectives, describes the basic safety label formats and colors, provides guidance on developing the various panels that together constitute a safety label, and includes safety label information with regard to operator’s manuals.

ASABE Revises Safety Standards for PTO Operations /news/asabe-revises-safety-standards-for-pto-operations/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 18:33:05 +0000 /?p=20323 The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has completed a revision to one of its most widely used standards.

The revision, ANSI/ASAE S318.19, Safety for Agricultural Field Equipment, changed requirements to the operator presence control when the power take-off (PTO) is engaged. An option was added to allow the use of a loud audible alarm in the area of the PTO if the PTO is operating without an operator in the operator’s station. Additionally, if the PTO is to be run intermittently for an extended period without an operator in the operator’s station, the revision allows the PTO alarm to be overridden until the tractor is stopped. Previously the alarm had to be overridden each time the PTO was restarted.

ASABE members with standards access and those with site-license privileges can access the full-text via electronic download on the ASABE online Technical Library at elibrary.asabe.org/. Others can obtain a download for a fee directly from the library or by contacting ASABE headquarters at OrderStandard@asabe.org.

For information on this or any other ASABE standard, contact Scott Cedarquist at 269-932-7031, cedarq@asabe.org. A current listing of all ASABE standards projects can be found on the ASABE web site at www.asabe.org/projects.

Fisher Joins Association as Consultant /shortliner/fisher-joins-association-as-consultant/ Tue, 03 Sep 2019 20:35:30 +0000 /?p=8025 Safety and standards guru John Fisher has joined the ąű¶ł´«Ă˝ as a consultant focused on safety standards affecting the shortline industry.

Fisher, vice president of technical affairs for Alamo Group, retires Friday, but this does not mean the end of his 42-year career advocating for product safety and accident prevention. He will continue to advocate as an independent consultant and commit a portion of his time to this Association.

“John has long been a tremendous asset to our Association,” said Executive Vice President Vernon Schmidt. “I know of no one else who brings his expertise and his passion for crafting standards that keep farmers and ranchers safe and minimize the risk of liability when accidents happen. He will be an outstanding resource and advocate for our members.”

At Alamo Group, Fisher has directed senior management regarding the organization’s safety culture, proactive safety training, status of product liability, employee safety injury investigations, and compliance with environmental laws and regulations.

His contributions, however, have extended far beyond the company. He has contributed to the revision of nine ASABE standards related to ergonomics, safety, and health in the machinery systems technical communities. The society recently celebrated Fisher’s contributions with a Standards Council Leadership Citation.

Expect to see Fisher at the Association’s annual meetings, and know that in the interim, he’ll be attending other gatherings to stay on top of industry standard developments and influence their outcomes. He will stay in touch with members through regular contributions in Association publications and conventions.
