U.S. regulators are pressuring ocean shipping companies and the seaport terminals they operate, seeking to resolve disruptions that have created backlogs at America’s biggest ports and wreaked havoc on the nation’s supply chains.

The Federal Maritime Commission will order container carriers and port terminal operators serving Los Angeles and New York to provide information related to container returns and availability. The information may be used as a basis for hearings, Commission enforcement action or further rule-making, the FMC said.
